In the level after completion of one stage, you are given a chance to activate a “Spin Master”, which allows you to activate several new hedgehog abilities.
These include the turbo, which allow you to boost your speed for a short period, a grappling move that allow you to grab objects and drop them at your opponent, and a wall jump that allow you to jump over obstacles on the screen.
Unlike the older Sonic games, in this version you don’t have to collect any special artifacts to power up your hedgehog (though you still can if you want), and you start off with less capabilities than in the other games. You can, however, buy upgrades to your abilities as you go along, so you’ll want to do that as soon as possible, but the point is that you have no special abilities to start with.
This makes for an interesting gameplay experience, especially when you consider that there are many different paths to take through each level.
